6 months, 2 MTKs and many words later...

Good night ritual conversation, last night:

Me: “Milo, sei il mio tesorino?!” (are you my little treasure?)
Milo: "Si! E tu…sei il mio tesoro!” (yes, and you are my treasure)
Me: "E papá?”
Milo: "E’ il tesorone!” (papa is the big treasure)
Me: "E Zeno?”
Milo: “….e’ un nanetto!” (he’s a dwarf)

So, my first MTK Milo who’s now 32 months, is entertaining us daily with all sorts of conversations, showcasing a fluent Italian and French, and a very proper Dutch.
He’s also showing increasingly interest in English, he repeats songs and little phrases he hears from me and his dad.

Particularly, he does not like to be “excluded” by our English conversations at dinner. Last night he interrupted us and asked us both, swinging his head from one to another, in Italian:
"Mamma e Papá, é andato bene il lavoro?” (mum, dad, did you have a good day at work?) , which melted us with joy…

The last six months have been of unrivalled intensity and I am very sad not to have been able to write …I probably missed some milestones of Milo’s language development. I did take a few notes here and there and I’ll try to resume some of the main anecdotes.

In the meantime, I’m glad to be back online and in blogosphere, and look forward to catching up with the whole world of multilingualism. A very joyful and multilingual 2007 to all!

A nice surpise to see you back again! Lovely, the "è andato bene il lavoro?" Om te smelten! Allora, vedigliamo si capisci...
After having read your post it is as if you have never been away.

So nice to have you back! While you were off taking care of the important things in life, I actually moved my blog moved over to blogger. Finally! I'm still just "An American Between Worlds," despite how hard I try to live in one atmosphere.

We all miss you over at Multilingual Living Magazine so whenever you find you have tons of time on your hands, you will have to share some of your multilingual musings with us so we can publish them! In the meantime, take care of yourself and remember that with two kids in your life, it is very normal to: forget to brush your teeth, get dressed, shower or even look in the mirror once before you leave the house!! No, really!

Uh, well, at least I think this is normal... right?

BIG HUGS!

Interesting that you guys are seemingly getting along OK on the multi-language front. Very different story for the majority of native English speakers living near us in France.

One family who moved over about 5 years back now find that as their 10 year old daughter has grown up in a largely French environment, they can barely communicate with her now as her English isn't good enough and neither is their French.

See for example my entry at http://www.foreignperspectives.com/messing-up-your-kids-english-in-france/2006/11/09/opinion.htm

oh goodness... you're BACK!!! I didn't think I'd see the day!!! Welcome back, friend! :) :)

I'm so glad Milo's doing so great in the language sector. We're a bit struggling over here, trying to get to the bottom of it. Is, or is not, multilingualism at fault for speech delay?? This is the eternal question that I am trying to find an answer to. Today will hopefully yield some results as we'll see an ergotherapist who is going to check I's overall development...

Hi! I found your blog through other blogs and are looking forward to read it! I am from Rome, living in London with a German husband and we are thinking of moving to Paris!! So, complicated story!! When we will have kids we will teach them Italian, English and French, so we will qualify for MTKs!!! Love your blog and I am very interested about life in Paris as an Italian!

Hey, I'm so glad you're back!! I'm sorry it took me so long to finally notice it.

I hope you find the time to tell us some of the stories about Milo's language development in the past six months. And... tell us also about baby Zeno, even though he's not a speaking MTK yet!
